What is Somatic Coaching?
Somatic coaching is a type of personal development coaching that focuses on integrating the body into the coaching process, using bodily sensations, movements, and physical experiences to help clients access deeper insights about their emotions and behaviors, essentially creating a stronger mind-body connection and fostering self-awareness through their physical experiences; the word “somatic” comes from the Greek word “soma” meaning “body.”.
Key points about somatic coaching:
- Body-centered approach: Unlike traditional coaching that primarily focuses on thoughts and feelings, somatic coaching emphasizes the information held within the body, like tension, posture, and physical sensations.
- Accessing “felt sense”: Somatic coaches guide clients to identify and explore their “felt sense,” which is the subtle physical sensation associated with an emotion, allowing them to understand their experiences on a deeper level.

Did you know that your mind stores memories in subconscious ways that cause pain in your current experience?
Simple and complex things get carried along with each of us unconsciously until we have space to recognize what’s happening in our mind + body and the skills to process it through our nervous systems.
Guarding patterns build up in the body, causing tightness and pain. These are protection patterns that result from past physical and/or psychological pain. It’s a natural response to protect ourselves against hurt, but sometimes we continue to hold these constrictive patterns to the point that the patterns themselves are what causes the pain now. Our original circumstance or injury has long since healed and is no longer our reality.
Common situations that result in subconscious patterns of guarding
Car accidents, injuries from playing sports or repetitive strain, unexpected devastation from natural disasters that effected your safety, emotional abuse, frequent yelling, being in threatening situations where you felt that you did not have a choice but were forced to submit, and other life experiences that were too much for you to process through to a place where you felt connected to yourself in a natural and whole-hearted way again. These are common situations that result in subconscious patterns of guarding that most of us don’t even realize we’re holding.

Pain and the protection patterns that can result from pain — which then reinforce pain 😭 — are part of life. In sessions of Somatic Coaching, we listen to the wisdom of your body. You’re invited to sense, breathe, and be present by just noticing the sensation without giving it a story. I’ll guide you to notice it with curiosity and help you to create space to be with it without trying to change it. Simple, but not always easy. 💜 In this way, chronic pain is unraveled as you “metabolize” the unconscious patterns of protection that have kept you hostage from the world. You regain the gift available to all humans, the opportunity for whole-hearted connection with yourself and your life.
